Di Maio Family Histography

The Di Maio Coat of Arms illustrated left was drawn by an heraldic artist from information officially recorded in ancient heraldic archives. Documentation for the Di Maio Coat of Arms design can be found in "Rietstap Armorial General". Heraldic artists of old developed their own unique language to describe an individual Coat of Arms. In their language, the Arms (shield) is as follows:
"D'or a un arbre de sin., pose sur un tertre de trois coupeaux du meme, la cime de l'arbre ch. de trois oiseaux d'or ranges en fasce, oelui a sen. cont."
When translated the arms description is:
"Gold, a green tree placed on a three hilled mound also green, the top of the tree charged with three gold birds placed horizontally, the one on the right turned facing right."
Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times. A Motto was not recorded with the Di Maio Coat of Arms.

Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were: occupation, location, father's name and personal characteristics. The surname Di Maio appears to be locational in origin, and is believed to be associated with the Italians, meaning, "one who lived near a field of brailing arbutus (Mayflowers)." Different spellings of the same original surname are a common occurrence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations. The most prominent variations of Di Maio are De Maio, De Majo and Di Majo.
